How Trussed AI is helping insurers and brokers operationalize AI with governance, compliance, and confidence

Artificial intelligence is rapidly becoming core infrastructure inside insurance, touching underwriting, claims, fraud detection, customer service, and internal operations. But as insurers move from experimentation to production, a critical problem has emerged: the systems governing AI adoption haven’t kept pace with the technology itself.

That gap is exactly where Trussed AI operates.

Founded by Ajay Dankar, Sunita Reddy and Branden McIntyre, Trussed AI provides infrastructure-level AI governance and compliance for regulated industries, including insurance. The company helps insurers and broker partners deploy generative and agentic AI in a way that is transparent, controllable, and auditable without slowing down innovation.

“Insurance sits at the intersection of regulation, risk management, and consumer trust,” Dankar says. “As AI becomes embedded into core workflows, governance can’t be an afterthought; it has to be designed into the infrastructure from day one.”

What Trussed AI Does and Why It Matters to Brokers

At its core, Trussed AI is an enterprise AI governance and compliance platform. Rather than monitoring AI systems after they’ve already been deployed, Trussed AI embeds governance directly into the AI stack itself.

That proactive approach enables insurers, MGAs, and broker partners to:

  • Enforce AI policies in real time across underwriting, claims, and service workflows
  • Maintain auditability and regulatory alignment as AI adoption scales
  • Safely deploy generative and agentic AI without adding operational risk

For brokers, this capability has real downstream impact. Many brokers are increasingly involved in evaluating, recommending, or supporting AI-enabled solutions for carrier and employer clients. Trussed AI makes it possible for those AI-driven workflows to move from pilot to production without introducing compliance gaps that can stall adoption.

“Brokers are often helping clients navigate not just insurance risk, but operational and technology risk as well,” Dankar explains. “When AI governance is handled at the infrastructure level, it removes a major barrier to adoption and allows brokers to stand behind these solutions with confidence.”

A Founder Shaped by Enterprise Scale

Dankar’s path to insurtech didn’t start with insurance — it started with deeply regulated enterprise environments. Before co-founding Trussed AI, he led product and engineering teams at AWS, Google, and Adobe, building platforms used by organizations that had zero tolerance for compliance and resilience failures.

“I saw firsthand how difficult it is for enterprises to adopt transformative technologies while staying compliant, secure, available and accountable,” he says. “AI amplifies that challenge because it’s adaptive, autonomous, and increasingly embedded in decision-making.”

Insurance, he realized, would be one of the earliest proving grounds for responsible AI adoption and one of the most unforgiving if companies got it wrong.

Governance Built for the Real World

What differentiates Trussed AI is how and where governance is enforced. Instead of relying on downstream reviews or manual oversight, the platform operates directly in the AI request and orchestration layer.

Key capabilities include:

  • Continuous, policy-based AI compliance enforcement
  • Centralized oversight across self-hosted, cloud-hosted, and third-party models
  • Immutable audit trails and detailed AI activity logging
  • Controls for agentic AI, including autonomous actions and human-in-the-loop safeguards
  • Governance for AI-generated code, including provenance tracking and licensing exposure

This architecture allows insurers and their broker partners to standardize governance across business units and vendors — even as AI stacks evolve.

“The ecosystem is changing too quickly for fragmented or reactive approaches,” Dankar says. “We designed Trussed AI to adapt across models, agents, and providers while maintaining consistent governance.”

From Theory to Production at Scale

That approach has already been validated in production environments.

The second largest U.S. insurer selected Trussed AI as its compliance gateway for generative and agentic AI applications, routing more than three billion AI tokens per day through the Trussed gateway to ensure their AI usage is compliant in all 50 states. The deployment demonstrates that large insurers don’t have to choose between innovation and control — they can have both.

For brokers, this kind of real-world validation matters. It shows that AI-enabled insurance solutions can operate at enterprise scale with appropriate oversight, making it easier to support, recommend, and distribute AI-driven capabilities to clients.

“What we hear consistently is that Trussed AI isn’t viewed as a gateway or monitoring tool,” Dankar says. “Customers increasingly see Trussed AI as the orchestration layer for AI governance. We help organizations govern AI at scale through visibility, policy enforcement, evidence collection, and regulator-ready reporting across employees, developers, applications, and autonomous agents.”

Navigating a High-Trust Industry

Building infrastructure for insurance is never fast or simple, particularly when AI is involved. One of Trussed AI’s early challenges was earning trust in an industry that moves carefully for good reason.

“Insurers are rightly cautious,” Dankar notes. “The risks span regulatory compliance, security, operational reliability, and consumer protection.”

Rather than racing to market with lightweight tooling, the team focused on enterprise-grade architecture, interoperability with existing systems, and regulatory alignment. That long-term approach paid off — not only with customers, but with strategic partners and investors who understood the importance of getting governance right.

The Role of BrokerTech Ventures

For Trussed AI, participating in the BTV accelerator provided valuable insight into how brokers and carriers are approaching AI adoption, compliance, and risk management in real-world operating environments. Through BTV Mania and engagement with industry leaders, the team was able to validate its approach against the practical realities of deploying AI within regulated insurance organizations.

One of the most important lessons was that successful AI governance must complement existing workflows rather than replace them. Brokers and carriers are increasingly adopting tools such as Microsoft Copilot and Purview alongside established submission intake and underwriting systems. As a result, Trussed AI has focused on integrating with the technologies organizations already use, helping them govern AI adoption without disrupting day-to-day operations.

Those conversations reinforced a clear takeaway: as brokers and insurers move beyond experimentation, governance and infrastructure control are becoming essential components of enterprise AI adoption. BTV's ability to convene insurers, brokers, technology leaders, and investors surfaced these priorities early, helping Trussed AI sharpen its product focus and align its roadmap with real-world market needs. BTV has also created meaningful connections with insurance-focused investors and operators who understand both enterprise technology and regulatory complexity, reflecting its role in accelerating innovation that is not only forward-looking, but built to operate at scale within the insurance industry.

Looking Ahead: Infrastructure for the Next Era of AI

As AI evolves from individual tools to interconnected systems of applications and autonomous agents, governance becomes significantly more complex. Organizations must manage policies, oversight, and risk across multiple AI vendors, models, and workflows while maintaining compliance in highly regulated environments. To address this shift, Trussed AI is expanding its platform to support agentic governance, cross-vendor policy orchestration, and AI software supply chain risk management. The company is also investing heavily in extensible APIs and developer integrations, enabling enterprises — and the brokers who advise them — to standardize governance across increasingly complex AI ecosystems.

“Our belief is simple,” Dankar says. “The next phase of AI adoption won't be limited by model capability. It will be defined by an organization's ability to govern AI at scale. Trust, governance, and operational control will become foundational requirements for every regulated industry.”

One of the clearest indicators of that shift will be the conversion of interest into deployment. As conversations from BTV Mania progress into customer engagements, Trussed AI sees growing evidence that brokers and carriers are moving beyond AI experimentation and toward operational adoption, with governance built in from the start rather than added later as a compliance exercise.

Building the Future on a Strong Foundation

As insurance continues its AI transformation, Trussed AI is tackling one of the industry’s most foundational challenges — ensuring innovation doesn’t come at the expense of compliance, transparency, or trust. For brokers, that work translates into something tangible: confidence that AI-enabled insurance solutions can scale responsibly, stand up to scrutiny, and deliver value without introducing hidden risk.

“We’re excited to build this future alongside insurers, brokers, regulators, and enterprise leaders,” Dankar says. “If AI is going to reshape insurance, it has to be built on a foundation the industry can trust.”
