Building the AI-Native Operating System for Benefits Brokers

‍How Monark HQ is helping brokers save time, uncover opportunities, and modernize the employee benefits workflow.

‍

For decades, employee benefits brokers have managed some of their most important workflows using a patchwork of spreadsheets, email chains, and legacy software. Request for proposal (RFP) processes often consume hours of administrative work, while critical data remains scattered across multiple systems.

‍

David Bryant, founder of Monark HQ, knows those frustrations firsthand. After spending 20 years in employee benefits insurance as both a broker and agency owner, Bryant wasn't originally looking to build an insurtech company. He was trying to solve a problem his own team faced every day.

‍

"I spent 20 years in employee benefits insurance, mostly as a broker and agency owner," Bryant says. "Eventually my own frustrations with certain things in my team's workflows led me to want to build a solution for my own problem."

‍

What began as a tool to streamline benefits quoting has since evolved into something much bigger. Today, Monark HQ serves more than 200 brokerages with an AI-powered platform designed to help brokers manage RFPs, renewals, compliance documentation, and agency workflows more efficiently. By combining agentic AI with deep data intelligence, Monark aims to help brokers spend less time on administrative tasks and more time serving clients.

‍

From Frustration to Opportunity

Like many successful startups, Monark was born from a challenge the founder experienced personally. Bryant and his team initially set out to build a software application that would help brokers track RFPs more effectively. At the time, many firms relied heavily on manual processes, emails, and spreadsheets to manage quoting activity. The inefficiency was obvious, and existing solutions had seen little innovation in years.

‍

"We didn't set out to start an insurtech," Bryant explains. "We started trying to build a simple SaaS tool to track RFPs that were traditionally done by email and spreadsheets. We wanted a better way to do it at scale."

‍

As development progressed, the team realized they had uncovered a much larger opportunity. The platform wasn't just helping brokers manage workflows — it was generating valuable market intelligence that could improve carrier matching, help brokers identify opportunities earlier, and create better outcomes throughout the quoting process.

‍

"We realized we were sitting on a bigger opportunity: using data intelligence to proactively match carrier demand with broker supply."

‍

That realization drove Monark's evolution from a quoting platform into what Bryant describes as an agentic AI agency management system and renewal workflow engine.

‍

Helping Brokers Do More in Less Time

At its core, Monark focuses on one goal: reducing the amount of time brokers spend on manual work.

‍

The platform provides employee benefits RFP management, agency management system (AMS) functionality, compliance document drafting, and renewal workflow support. Together, these capabilities help brokers streamline some of the most time-consuming activities in the benefits business.

‍

The impact can be substantial. According to Bryant, a traditional RFP process can take approximately eight hours per employer. With Monark, brokers can dramatically reduce that workload while improving consistency and outcomes.

‍

"Our primary broker features are employee benefits RFP management, AMS functionality, and compliance document drafting," Bryant says. "RFPs have typically taken eight hours per employer to complete. In year one, a broker might spend 20 minutes on our system to do the same work."

‍

For brokers, that time savings translates directly into greater capacity. Teams can focus more energy on advising clients, building relationships, and driving growth rather than managing paperwork and repetitive tasks.

‍

Monark's technology also helps brokers deliver better recommendations to clients. The platform can automatically analyze employee census files, evaluate provider network access based on employee ZIP codes, and model multiple contribution strategies within interactive proposals. These capabilities help brokers move beyond simple cost comparisons and provide more strategic guidance to employers.

‍

"We map employees' home ZIP codes against provider networks and generate a fit score by radius," Bryant says. "We can show whether a plan actually works for the employees, not just whether it saves money."

‍

What Sets Monark Apart

In a crowded software landscape, Bryant believes three factors distinguish Monark from competitors: cost, AI, and data.

  1. Cost: Monark is free for brokers. "No comparable system runs a fully free model," Bryant says. "Brokers save tens of thousands a year in SaaS fees." Rather than charging brokerages, Monark monetizes on the carrier side, leveraging the data flowing through the platform to create more effective carrier matching and distribution opportunities. This approach removes a common barrier to adoption while allowing agencies of all sizes to access advanced technology.
  2. AI: Monark’s commitment to AI enables rapid innovation. "As an agentic AI company we build fast," Bryant says. "A user can request something Monday and see it shipped Friday." That speed allows Monark to respond quickly to broker needs while continuously enhancing the platform.
  3. Data: Because Monark captures interactions across the benefits quoting process, the company can generate insights that would be difficult for brokers or carriers to assemble independently. These insights help brokers identify stronger opportunities and help carriers engage with the right prospects earlier in the sales cycle.

‍

Delivering Real-World Results

For Bryant, some of Monark's most meaningful successes aren't measured in software metrics, but in the impact the platform has on brokers' businesses.

‍

One example involved an insurance professional looking to transition from Medicare sales into group employee benefits. She had only completed one benefits sale and wasn't sure how to build a successful practice. Monark helped simplify the process by guiding her through data collection, quote requests, and proposal generation. The result was multiple new group sales that helped sustain her agency.

‍

Bryant also points to agencies facing significant software renewal costs. In several cases, brokers believed they had no alternative to renewing expensive software contracts, only to discover they could access comparable or improved functionality through Monark at no cost.

‍

Another agency used Monark's proposal capabilities to quickly add pet insurance options to client presentations, generating $12,000 in new commissions during the first year.

‍

These stories underscore a common theme: helping brokers uncover new opportunities while reducing friction in their day-to-day operations.

‍

A Vision Beyond Quoting

While Monark has gained traction through its quoting and RFP capabilities, Bryant sees those features as only the beginning.

‍

"Our vision is to become the benefits broker's system of record, the platform they run and manage their entire agency on," he says.

‍

The company's roadmap is focused on modernizing categories of broker software that have seen little meaningful innovation in the past decade. By expanding deeper into agency workflows and continuing to leverage AI-driven automation, Monark hopes to build a fully integrated platform that supports brokers throughout the client lifecycle.

‍

Accelerating Growth Through BrokerTech Ventures

Monark joined the BrokerTech Ventures Accelerator to gain exposure to industry leaders and gather feedback from brokers, carriers, and distribution partners. According to Bryant, the experience exceeded expectations.

‍

"We were really impressed with the quality of the meetings in such a compressed period of time," he says. "Above all, it is filled with some of the most helpful people in the industry."

‍

The company is now building on that momentum as it expands nationwide, grows carrier relationships, and advances its next phase of innovation. At the same time, Monark is raising a seed round to support continued product development and sales growth.

‍

For a company that started with a simple goal of making RFPs easier, the vision has become considerably larger. Monark is reimagining how employee benefits brokers manage their business, helping them work faster, operate more strategically, and uncover new opportunities through AI and data. And if Bryant's vision comes to life, the future benefits broker may spend far less time chasing paperwork and far more time delivering value to clients.
